Initial Conversation

Cyndi passed out 2009 Lights Out poster for initial approval. Group recommended a color change to the text.

Business cards were also premiered at the meeting. Group gave approval.

Judy Williams is out with a broken ankle. Hopes are that she will be up and around in time for turtle patrol. Need to let Penelope Kingman know that she (Judy) may not be available first part of season.

Orders of Business

1) Beach Furniture Ordinance - Rolla Shuh took charge of this topic.

Discussed the overall verbage of the draft ordinance.

Dick Williams made a very valid point regarding p.2 under Prohibition of activities disruptive to Marine Turtles: Dick suggested that the language be changed so that the  mentioned prohibited activities be specified as “prohibited beach activities”. This will make the language explicit so there is no chance of interpretation by the LBK Commission.

Also regarding p. 2, Cyndi Seamon corrected the punctuation of Kemp’s Ridley to Kemp’s ridley.

Executive Committee approved the Ordinance based on the completion of the above mentioned changes.

2) Budget – presented by Freda Perrotta

$7000 in budget with $3000 going towards t-shirts. GPS’s purchased for each permittee’s backpack. Overall sales of t-shirts will replenish coffers.

Mary Jean Wenzel will submit tax forms for LBKTW. Tim Thurman will contact Mary Jean to see how this is progressing.

Budget is an agenda item to be presented by Freda Perrotta at the Spring Meeting on April 5th.

3) Review of new “On Beach” processes – the way we will conduct our volunteer activities.

  - there are no section captains for 2009

  - this is a team effort and every permittee is wholly responsible for filling in forms correctly.

  - once patrol of a section of beach is completed, the volunteer must contact MOTE to clear the beach and report any activity.

  - anyone who wants to be on the permit MUST attend one of the MOTE training classes.

  - all permittees will have their own backpack with all supplies. These backpacks must be accessible at all times. Numbered supplies will be provided at the April 5th meeting.

  - a laminated card will be created with the schedule on one side and the contact info for all permittees on the other side. This is important for non-permitted volunteers to contact permitted volunteers when there is nesting activity that they (non-permitted volunteers) cannot proceed with other than flagging.

  - a box(es) will be supplied at the 6400 block to drop off completed nesting forms to be picked up by MOTE.

  - Tim Thurman wants to figure out how will we (LBKTW) be communicated with from MOTE as to how we will know when to excavate a nest since we will not be collecting the data as we have done in the past. Can we have a report come from MOTE to Natalie Treonis that communicates the progress of the nests? This is to be determined.

Other Items of Discussion

1) Name the Stake -

This will be managed by Freda Perrotta with assistance by Rosemary Calandruccio and Marie Riepenhoff-Talty (when she is in town.)

25 stakes have been sold in advance.

There can be a max of 4 named stakes per nest. (This was approved by the Executive Committee)

Need to determine a “stop” date for selling “name the stake” so we do not sell stakes beyond nesting activity.

Set up a spreadsheet that collects all the information for “name the stake”. This spreadsheet will be on the LBKTW website for stake purchasers to reference about their nest.

2) Inclement Weather -

Freda Perrotta will be the contact for volunteers living off island to call in the event weather looks threatening.

Cyndi Seamon will fill in as back up for Freda.

3) Tim Thurman will submit an email to all volunteers (permitted, non-permitted and LOA holders) to tell them to submit days when they will be available as substitutes.

4) Each month a new calendar page for each zone will be placed in the box at 6400 block. This calendar will have the information of who is on vacation and who is substituting, along with all the appropriate contact information.

5) April 5th Meeting –

Dick Williams will be responsible for sign-in.

Elaine Williams will be responsible for collecting dues.

T-shirt sales will be separate from dues payments and will be handled by Freda

   Perrotta.

Emmy Lou Gilbert will facilitate the “1st nest” raffle.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
