Longboat Key Turtle Watch Board Meeting Minutes March 15, 2008

The March meeting of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch, Inc was called to order by President Tim Thurman at 8:05 AM at The Shore. Present were: Alison Albee, Paula Clark, Nathalie Treonis, Rosemary Treonis, Connie Shindewolf, Freda Perotta, Cyndi Seamon, Cindy Hayworth and Tim Thurman.

Review of Minutes:Freda moved we accept the minutes of the fall meeting Cyndi seconded and all approved.

Agenda item: Start of Season

Training: Alison asked for a run down of who must attend this years training with SNBS/INBS. It was determined that Peggy, EmmyLou, Judy and Mimi would be required to attend in order to remain on the permit.

Cindy asked that Jim Hayworth be added to the permit since he has had the required training.

Trainees at the workshop need to know that they are on Permit 27.

Notice to Property Owners: Cyndi reports that MaryLou Johnson will be in charge of contacting properties about nests that are due to hatch. We decided that one week was an appropriate amount of warning for neighbors. Postcards that match this years poster will be mailed to those properties owners. Tim suggested we could search the county records for absent owner's alternate address.

In addition we will continue to distribute table tents and posters to resorts and condos. Jen has a large supply available for us. Paula reports that the town will send notices with utility bills to alert residents to turtle season.

Beach nesting protocol: Paula reviewed the changes to the reporting forms and small modification to reporting. This year we will fax a copy of the forms each day to Mote, then forward to Freda at the end of the week who will take them to Nathalie for final processing of the data.

Tim rcommends we have cameras with us.

Agenda Item: Lighting Ord and associated activities

Lighting enforcement:

Cyndi reports that the town will have no beach observer this year. However, Paula and Cyndi will survey the beach at night and take pictures and report lights to the town. This year the town will enforce lighting restrictions per Randy Fowler. Bruce St Denis has promised that action will be taken on lighting issues. Captains will report lights to Cyndi and she will forward reports to Paula who will coordinate with the town.

Lights Out Poster:

Cyndi presented the new poster that was completed by Madison Ave. It is very eyecatching. Using a photograph instead of art work saved a lot of time and energy. The result is a nice product with the photo donated by Mote and the printing and layout donated by Madison Ave. Sponsors this year were Rusty Chinnis, Design 2000 and The Market/Longboat Liquers. Alison moved we approve the new poster and Nathalie second. All approved.

Beach Photo Project: A long project has been completed by Cyndi and Chuck to have photos and addresses available for our address list. The project is completed for the most part and needs just a little modification before finalization. It will be ready to go for the season.

Agenda Item: Membership Process:

Dues: Dues this year will be $15. Lists of members will be maintained and recruitment efforts will continue. We have attracted a small number of new members.

A membership card was suggested but the group declined to proceed with the idea.

Agenda Item: T-Shirts

T-Shirts: Colors for this year were dicussed and the board selected white with royal blue letters. Freda is working with a new vendor and is very pleased with their cooperation so far. She is placing a large order for the season soon.

Participation: Tim discussed the following committees and will be asking for help at the Spring Meeting.

Ordinance Committee...we decided we don't need this committee at this time.

Publicity Committee..our new member Gail Condrick will be asked to be our Publicity Chair

Nomination Committe.. Tim will ask for a committee chair at the Spring meeting

Fund Raiser...Turtle naming project, we need a chairman for this committee. Requirements of this committee will be to place items at post office so people can purchase a stake. Also, the committee will communicate with these folks about the success of their nest.

Great American Cleanup..April19, Cyndi needs help with this project since she will be out of town.

Digs...Tim and Alison will work on some note cards to provide direction for speakers at our digs so we can make a professional presentation and keep the talk on point and concise.
